![]() With greater resources and sophistication, MK cadres stepped up their attacks, aiming more daringly for symbolic military targets that rallied black opinion behind the ANC. Relative to the earlier period’s infiltration of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) guerrillas into the country increased. The 1983 constitution was roundly criticised in opposition circles for its unrepresentative character. This decade witnessed an increase in the armed struggle combined with mass politicisation of the oppressed peoples. Numerous factors characterised the intensification of the freedom struggle against the National Party government in the 1980s.
